The Church teaches… It is the responsibility, in the first place, of parents and those who take the place of parents, as well as with the priest, to see that children who have reached the age of reason are correctly prepared and are nourished, with the divine food, as early as possible. CJC 914
In St Patrick’s Parish, First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are offered to children who are in school Year 4 or above, and are baptised Catholics. If your family is not Catholic, but you wish to find out about being received into the Catholic Church, please contact Fr. John (01207502196). The preparation of children for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion follows the diocesan Sacramental Programme, which is based on a partnership between family, parish and school.
St Patrick’s Primary School
Pupils are taught Religious Education through the Come and See Programme. In ‘Come and See’ in Years R, 1 and 2, the Eucharist topics do not cover a specific study of parts of the Mass. In Year 3 ‘Come and See’, the Eucharist topic includes the study of parts of the Mass. Therefore, the Sacramental Preparation Programme is taught in Year 4, as children are building on relevant prior knowledge as well as being of a more mature age to better understand the Sacraments. This is a Diocesan Department for Education recommendation. The children study the Reconciliation theme in the Autumn Term and the Eucharist Theme in the Spring Term.

The parish element of the programme is provided by a team of volunteer catechists. At present, there is a team of six catechists working with the children. The children attend six sessions during their preparation year – three preparing for Reconciliation and three preparing for Eucharist. The children must attend each session and the following Sunday Mass.
